Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has blasted Chelsea for allowing Brazilian attacker Willian to leave Stamford Bridge on a free transfer this window.
The 33-year-old midfielder parted ways with the Blues after seven years to join the Emirates Stadium outfit. His deal expired at the end of last season, but efforts to extend his stay failed.
Reports claim the west London club had offered him a two-year deal but the former Shakhtar Donetsk star wanted nothing less than three years.
He however made an impact on his debut for the North Londoners after providing two assists in their 3-0 win over Fulham to get their Premier League campaign off to a winning start.
Merson insists that Chelsea made a huge mistake for allowing the player walkout for free, adding that the decision has put Frank Lampard under immense pressure to deliver.
He told Sky Sports: "I cannot believe Chelsea let Willian go. I know they have gone out and got special players, but there is nothing to say they are going to hit the ground running.
"In Willian, you have got someone there who is ready-made. I like who they have signed, but they cost a lot of money, and their wages are probably the same as Willian.'
During his seven-year stint at Stamford Bridge, Willian lifted two EPL titles, one FA Cup, a Carabao Cup, and a Europa League trophy before joining the North London club.
Merson continued: "Frank Lampard has to win now. He has not got four years. That's management, I'm not being horrible.
"Even if Frank wins the league this year, it does not mean he is going to be there in four years. We know that and how it changes. "Who is to say this is not going to take time for Chelsea? And I don't think they've got time at the moment."
Legit.ng earlier reported that Arsenal’s new signing Willian recently revealed in an interview how his teammate at Chelsea, David Luiz, practically begged him to join him at the Emirates.
The 32-year-old sealed a famous £220,000-a-week deal to join the North London club last week, and he is set to link up with Luiz, who is also his international teammate with Brazil.
Speaking to the Arsenal website, Willian, known for his whipping crosses and pace on the wing, talked about a conversation he had with Luiz who was intent on a reunion with him.
