Although Governor Godwin Obaseki has lost some of his top allies to the All Progressives Congress (APC), he recently got the backing of Peter Obi in his re-election bid.
The former vice-presidential candidate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called on the Igbo community in Edo to vote for Governor Obaseki in their numbers during the forthcoming gubernatorial election.
Obi sent this appeal to southeasterners in the state during a meeting between PDP bigwigs and the governor in Benin on Thursday, September 17.
The former Anambra governor told his fellow kinsmen in Edo that Governor Obaseki, as the PDP flagbearer in the state truly deserves their full support in the poll.
Making similar efforts, Obaseki promised Igbos in the state that he will not stop the transformation agenda which his government has continued to uphold.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the APC, Chief Sam Nkire, has predicted victory for his party.
Nkire, a member of the APC's national caucus, however, said the win would likely be narrow, adding, “a win is a win.”
He also said those who believed that Edo state was still a ‘PDP state’ were living in the past, adding that the last two governors of the state were APC members.
Nkire further claimed that the only way the PDP could win was through electoral malpractice, without which the APC was sure to carry the day.
"It is a well-known fact that it’s not in the character of the ruling party to engage in thuggery or ballot-box snatching and therefore, APC guarantees a clean win without fraudulent practices,” he said.
Chief Nkire maintained that although the Edo state governorship election was not a do-or-die affair for APC as it allegedly seems with the PDP, his party would govern Edo state one more time.
