- The convoys of both candidates cross paths during campaigns in Akoko southwest local government area of the state
The political tension in Ondo state escalated on Wednesday, September 16, after the convoy of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu was reportedly attacked by thugs in Akoko southwest local government area of the state.
Another set of thugs also reportedly attacked the convoy of Eyitayo Jegede, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Ondo governorship election.
According to the Vanguard newspaper, that attacks occurred when the convoy of Akeredolu met with the convoy of Jegede in the town during campaigns.
Akeredolu, the current Ondo state governor who is seeking a second term on the platform of the All progressives Congress (APC), has blamed the PDP for the attack.
Richard Olabode, the spokesperson of the Akeredolu/ Ayedatiwa campaign organisation alleged that thugs loyal to the PDP first attacked the governor’s convoy in Oba- Akoko and set the campaign vehicle ablaze.
He called on security agencies to investigate the attack on the governor and make the perpetrators face justice.
But in a counter-accusation, the spokesperson for the PDP, Kennedy Petetei blamed APC thugs for the attack on Jegede’s convoy.
He alleged that the attackers alighted from the governor’s convoy to attack the PDP campaign team.
Petetei said some of Jegede’s supporters sustained injuries and have been taken to the hospital for treatment.
The Ondo state police command has confirmed the clash in the community.
The spokesperson for the command, Tee Leo lkoro said mobile policemen have been deployed curtail the crisis.
Meanwhile, the deputy governor of Ondo state, Ajayi Agboola, has accused his boss, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of frustrating his gubernatorial campaign.
Agboola is contesting the position of the Ondo state chief executive under the Zenith Labour Party, having failed to get the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The newspaper reported that the belief in the camp of Jegede was that Ajayi might exhibit the same tendency that led to a crisis of confidence between him and his boss, Akeredolu.
In other news, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has hit hard at his predecessor in office, Olusegun Mimiko over the incoming governorship election in the state.
The Nation reported that the governor also berated the embattled state deputy governor and candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) for the election, Agboola Ajayi.
He said the combination of Mimiko and Agboola as the third force in the state does not make him nervous, adding that his works would give him victory at the polls.
