A former Nigerian military head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has called on Governor Godwin Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu to keep to their promise of a violence-free gubernatorial election.
General Abubakar, as the chairman of the National Peace Committee (NPC), made this appeal to Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu after the duo signed the peace accord ahead of the election.
The former Nigerian leader told both rival flagbearers that their integrity as politicians are at stake in the poll.
He noted that their reputation will be compromised if they or their supporters do anything to undermine democracy during or even after the election.
The former leader warned: “By agreeing to sign this covenant of peace, all of you are committing yourselves to ensure an enduring peace in Nigeria and Edo state before, during and after the election and agreeing to look beyond short term political gains, sectoral interests or narrow party advantage and accepting nothing, but for the development of Edo state.
“I urge all of us to use the process of election in Edo state as a test of future elections, as reiterated by President Muhammadu Buhari. Let every Nigerian be respected and be given an opportunity cast his or her vote, without intimidation or coercion and once that vote is cast, let us applaud that vote."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that in the spirit of peace and fairness ahead of the Edo gubernatorial election, the two biggest rivals, Governor Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu embraced each other on Wednesday, September 2.
This welcome development took place at the palace of the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, on Wednesday.
This, as many saw it, ended the heated controversy and rivalry that have characterised the relationship between these flagbearers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo.
