Delta state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has urged the people of Edo state to re-elect Governor Godwin Obaseki on Saturday, September 19, saying it is in their best interest to do so.
Okowa, who is chairman of South-South Governors Forum, made the call at Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) mega rally to bring to an end the campaign of Governor Obaseki at Samuel Ogbemudia stadium, Benin city, on Tuesday, September 15.
Okowa said that he and other governors of PDP were in support of Obaseki’s re-election because of his sterling performance in the past four years.
According to Okowa, if Obaseki did so much in his first term in office, in spite of all the challenges he encountered, it will be in the interest of Edo people to ensure that he is re-elected for a second term to enable him execute more development projects in the state.
He commended Obaseki and the PDP in Edo for the ward-to-ward campaign for the Saturday poll, describing it as unprecedented.
He urged the electorate to be vigilant and ensure that their ballots would count, adding that they should not be afraid.
The governor assured the people that he and all his colleagues in the south-south would be on ground on election day to ensure victory for the Edo state chief executive.
“Obaseki is one governor we are very proud of in the Governor's Forum because of his high knowledge in economic development and good governance.
“He has done very well in this first term in spite of all the challenges he encountered in his former party and it is my firm belief that re-electing him for a second term is in the best interest of Edo people,” Governor Okowa said.
Speaking earlier, Governor Obaseki declared that with the support of Edo people and endorsements by over 100 groups in the state, he is certain of victory in Saturday’s gubernatorial election.
The governor urged eligible voters in the state to come out en masse to vote for the PDP to enable him to consolidate on the achievements and put an end to godfatherism in the state.
Earlier in the day, a media aide to Governor Obaseki, Crusoe Osagie, declared that the former Lagos state governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, cannot extend his political empire to Edo, adding that the people of the state are determined to end godfatherism in their domain.
Osagie was reacting to a viral video of Tinubu asking the people of Edo state not to vote for Governor Obaseki.
In a statement issued in Benin city, the Edo state capital, Osagie said: “Tinubu, in his quest to extend his political dominance and empire to Edo state, decided to take over the role of Edo people to choose through the ballot who to govern them for the next four years.”
