Senegal international Edouard Mendy is on the verge of completing a five-year move to Chelsea valued around £18 million French League side Rennes this summer.

The 28-year-old goalkeeper has a deal with the Ligue 1 side until 2023, but the Blues have made him a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaba.

However, Mendy's story goes beyond that of another football star moving to the Premier League as he was almost frustrated out of the game five years ago.

According to the story shared by a France-based football writer and presenter, Matt Spiro, on Twitter, the shot-stopper had no job in 2015 and was already looking for another local job.

The African star is however in the advanced stage of his move to the Stamford Bridge and play in one of the best Leagues in the world.

Spiro tweeted: "Edouard Mendy to Chelsea would be an incredible story.

"Five years ago, aged 23, he was unemployed, queuing at the local job centre and ready to quit football. Has shown amazing strength as well as real quality as a goalkeeper."

Having endured rough patches earlier in his career, Mendy bounced back to help Rennes qualify for the Champions League for the first time after a third-place finish in the 2019-20 season.

The west London club is said to have been monitoring the goaltender for some time, though, they were also linked with Lille's Mike Maignan for the role.

Frank Lampard was said to have enquired about Ajax's Andre Onana, Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak and a few other top keepers.

Meanwhile, the Blues legend has completed a move for a few stars ahead of the coming campaign - with Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech topping the list.

Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and a few others are still expected to increase the competitive value of the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Premier League side Chelsea are interested in signing Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy who was recommended by the Blues' legend Petr Cech.

The Blues are looking for a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga at Stamford Bridge following his unimpressive performances last season.

Before joining Chelsea in 2004 from Rennes, Petr Cech played more than 70 games for the side and he is still keeping contact with the club's chiefs.
