- Presidential spokesperson Femi Adesina has said only President Buhari can look his predecessor, Obasanjo, in the eye and survive it
- Adesina mentioned this in a piece where he highlighted the role Buhari played in the re-election of the AfDB president, Akinwumi Adesina
- The spokesperson said Buhari stood against the wishes of America to back Adesina for the seat
Femi Adesina, the special adviser on media and publicity President Muhammadu Buhari, has said only his principal has enough confidence to confront former President Olusegun Obasanjo, tell him his honest opinion on things “and survive it”.
The presidential spokesperson mentioned this in a piece titled Buhari's Applause for Akinwumi Adesina where he highlighted the role played by President Buhari in the re-election of Adesina as president of the African Development Bank (AfDB).
In the piece, Adesina compared Obasanjo to “America and some other world powers”, adding that “you have every right to shiver in the broiling sun” when they come after you.
He said, “President Buhari stood against the wishes of America on AfDB Presidency” and supported Adesina's re-election.
“If America and some other world powers come after you, you have every right to shiver in the broiling sun. It’s like Chief Olusegun Obasanjo telling you to dismount from the horse of leadership in Nigeria. Only a Muhammadu Buhari can look him straight in the eyes, and say; No sir. And survive it,” the presidential spokesperson wrote.
In the buildup to the 2019 presidential election, Obasanjo had advised President Buhari not to seek re-election for a second term in office, citing the president's alleged poor performance.
President Buhari, however, defied Obasanjo's statement, sought re-election and won.
In his reaction to President Buhari's re-election, the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu said the president got his second term mandate from God through the people of Nigeria.
He said the alleged claim by former President Obasanjo prior to the election that Buhari would not win the election because he did not support him had been neutralised by the president’s triumph.
Akiolu alleged that Obasanjo had always arrogated to himself the divine power to determine the country’s leaders, adding that Buhari’s victory in the last election had demystified him.
Akiolu said he had always believed Buhari would win the election and that he was glad that the former president had been proved wrong at the end of the day.
