- At last, Governor Godwin Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu have sued for peace ahead of the Edo governorship poll
- In fact, both flag-bearers from PDP and APC respectively embraced each other at the palace of Oba Ewuare II
- This has raised hopes that the forthcoming election in Edo will be peaceful
In the spirit of peace and fairness ahead of the Edo gubernatorial election, the two biggest rivals, Governor Godwin Obaseki and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu embraced each other on Wednesday, September 2.
This welcome development took place at the palace of the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, on Wednesday, Channels TV reports.
This, as many saw it, ended the heated controversy and rivalry that have characterised the relationship between these flagbearers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo.
Among prominent politicians and stakeholders who attended the peace meeting at the monarch's palace were Adams Oshiomhole, John Oyegun, and the state's deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.
Preaching against perceived violence ahead of the poll, the Oba called on all warring political groups in the state to sue for a peaceful election, reminding them that they are all family.
Oba Ewuare said: “To me, they (the political actors in Edo) are all one family, and what cannot be resolved when you are all family?
“Family can quarrel but there must be a resolution. Today, that is what I want us to achieve; there must be a resolution.”
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that President Muhammadu Buhari had again warned politicians to shun any act capable of disrupting the order of the forthcoming governorship election in Edo state.
Oshiomhole conveyed the president’s message while speaking to State House correspondents after a closed-door meeting with the Nigerian leader.
The former APC chairman was seen with Professor Ibrahim Gambari, the president's chief of staff, dressed in his traditional khaki suit heading towards Buhari’s office.
The former governor of Edo state speaking further said he briefed the president on the forthcoming governorship election.
He explained that President Buhari is excited at the process of having a free and fair election, without violence, adding that the laws are clear as to what should be done when people misuse firearms.
