- John Obi Mikel inspired Stoke City to 3-0 win over Leeds United
- The former Nigerian captain joined them on a free transfer mid-last month
- Mikel made a scoring debut for the Potters in their 5-0 win over Shrewsbury Town
Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel was in superb form for his new side Stoke City in their 3-0 win over newly-promoted Premier League side Leeds United in a friendly game.
The 33-year-old recently joined the Potters as a free agent having walked out of his previous contract with Turkish side Trabzonspor earlier this year.
Chelsea legend was handed the captaincy armband in the seventh minute after Ryan Shawcross suffered an injury earlier in the game.
He, however, took charge of the midfield Michael O'Neill's side until he was removed in the 65th minute owing to match fitness.
It was Nathan Collins who opened scoring for Stoke City in the 24th minute with a cool finish from 10 yards out.
Lee Gregory doubled his side's lead just seven minutes into the resumption after converting a superb cross from Tom Ince.
And just two minutes after the hour mark, Ince registered his name on the scores sheet - a few minutes after assisting his side's second goal.
This was the second test game the former Champions League and Europa League winner has featured for Stoke since he joined them on August 17.
Mikel Obi made a scoring debut for the Championship side in their 5-1 impressive victory over Shrewsbury Town.
The former Chinese Super League star is not new to the English lower league having spent the second half of the 2018-19 season at Middlesbrough where he quickly became the fans' favourite.
His performance at the club as well as his contributions to Nigeria's third-place finish at the 2019 AFCON Championship in Egypt helped him secure a move to Turkey, but that relationship was cut short over a disagreement on a COVID-19 issue.
Legit.ng earlier reported that John Obi Mikel has began his career at English Championship club Stoke City on an impressive note after scoring for the side in their 5-1 win over Shrewsbury Town.
Although the encounter was a pre-season friendly, but the former Chelsea midfielder showed that he is in good shape and form to do well for Stoke City in their campaign in the coming season.
Stoke City started the match impressively and it took them only 10 minutes to open scoring through Tashan Oakley-Boothe who scored in an incredible fashion.
