An attempted robbery attack on the convoy of Godwin Obaseki on the Benin-Auchi highway was on Monday, August 31, foiled by security operatives with the Edo state governor.
According to Daily Trust, the incident happened when Obaseki was in a convoy on his way for the Ward-to-Ward campaign at Uhunmwode local government area of the state.
It was gathered that hoodlums mistook Obaseki for a prominent personality when the governor’s convoy was moving slowly without blaring siren at Erua village.
They allegedly fell a tree to block the road which brought the convoy to a halt temporarily in an attempt to rob motorists and commuters of their belonging.
The hoodlums who had laid siege on sighting the convoy, started firing gunshot to scare the road users before carrying out their operation, fortunately the security operatives attached to Obaseki were able to thwart the attack. The unidentified men then fled into bush.
A security source in the convoy who prefers to remain anonymous speaking to the online publication said the armed robbers thought Obaseki was a VIP as his convoy was moving slowly and wasn't blaring siren.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the deputy governor of Edo state, Philip Shaibu, have traded blames over gunshots fired during a rally at Jattu in Edo North Senatorial District.
Ize-Iyamu who spoke through the chairman of Edo APC Media Campaign Council, Prince John Mayaki, accused Shaibu of mobilising the thugs behind the violence.
The APC governorship candidate alleged that the thugs occupied venue of the party’s rally in Jattu, scaring residents and other supporters of APC with gunshots.
In a related development, the APC media campaign council for the Edo state governorship election has demanded an investigation into Governor Obaseki’s alleged arms importation, thugs’ escort and massive shootings during his campaigns.
The party berated the PDP and its governorship candidate for the shootings at Obaseki’s rally in Igueben, saying the incident affirmed its previous allegation of Obaseki’s importation of guns and inclusion of buses full of armed thugs in his convoy.
