The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned what it calls “the increasing attacks on its members and supporters” ahead of the September 19 governorship election in Edo state.
The deputy director-general of the Edo PDP campaign council, Engineer Gideon Ikhine, said this during Governor Godwin Obaseki's reelection campaign rally in Ora, Ward 6, Ovia South-West local government area of the state.
The party warned that the simplicity and meekness of the candidate and Edo state governor must not be taken for granted.
Ikhine said: “Everywhere we go, they will go and destroy our campaign materials and sometimes beat up our supporters.”
“The laws and powers are in the hands of the governor. His simplicity should not be insulted. Is it because he is gentle? Our governor is gentle like Jesus Christ, but he will be re-elected like a lion,” he said.
Ikhine also urged eligible voters in the area to vote PDP and protect their votes for continuity in government.
“Anybody planning to rig this election should have a re-think as Edo people are ready to defend their votes,” he added.
Meanwhile, the reelection bid of Governor Obaseki on Thursday, August 27 got a major boost as over 1,000 health and environmental volunteers from the 18 local government areas of Edo state declared their support for the second term bid of the governor.
The volunteers under the aegis of Young Environmental Health Officers Forum (YEHOF) also promised to mobilise over 5, 000 other voters across the state to ensure victory for Obaseki and his deputy, Comrade Phillip Shaibu.
Speaking to journalists in Benin city, coordinator of the forum, who represented the other volunteers, Joy Oluwagbohunmi, noted that “the decision to back the governor was on account of the government’s sterling performance in the first term.”
Legit.ng had earlier reported that the Peoples Democratic Party Youth Assurance Movement recently alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is fine-tuning strategies to rig the poll, while Governor Obaseki, the PDP candidate is coasting to victory on the back of huge grassroots' support.
Coordinator of the group, Prince Asunogie Tajudeen, made the comments during a press briefing in Benin city, the Edo state capital on Friday, August 28.
Tajudeen urged the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to remain above board, stressing that “millions of Nigerians, home and abroad, are closely monitoring the events leading to the poll.”
