Former United States of America vice president, Joe Biden was officially nominated on Tuesday night, August 18, as the Democratic nominee for president.

The former vice president tweeted his acceptance after he was adopted as the party's candidate in a virtual convention.

The historic moment played out with Biden and his wife, former Second Lady Jill Biden, celebrating remotely with family members as the entire convention was virtual due to COVID-19 regulations.

She noted: “We just need leadership worthy of our nation. Honest leadership to bring us back together. That's Joe.”

Last year, a security guard said "I love you" to Joe Biden in an elevator and the exchange went viral.

On the night Biden was nominated as the Democratic Party presidential candidate, that same woman gave the first speech officially nominating him for president at the Democratic National Convention, CNN reports.

Jacquelyn Brittany, an African American woman who works as a security guard at The New York Times, was escorting the former vice president to a Times editorial board meeting in December when she turned to him and said, "I love you. I do. You're like my favourite."

The exchange was aired as part of the Times' TV series "The Weekly," and was circulated on social media.

Brittany said: “We've been through a lot, and we have tough days ahead. But nominating someone like that to be in the White House is a good place to start. That's why I nominate my friend Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.”

Some Americans have been reacting to Biden's nomination.

David Weissman tweeted: "I am a former Trump supporter, a US Army Veteran, and I’m excited to vote for my first ever Democratic nominee for the president of the United States."

Jon Cooper: "My husband and I will never forget the time we celebrated the holidays with Joe Biden and Jill Biden. They were both so gracious and made the evening very special! " had earlier reported that the Biden named California senator Kamala Harris as his vice-presidential running mate ahead of the U.S presidential elections.

Experts say Biden's historic choice will likely bolster his chances of beating Donald Trump in an election many predict will be a close race.

Harris, a barrier-breaking former prosecutor, is the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, and is the first black woman and the first Asian American to run on a major party ticket.
