The Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo has denied claims that it is in support of Agboola Ajayi, the deputy governor, in his bid to become the state's next leader.
The PDP in Ondo referred to the reports as false allegations fabricated by hypocrites and said that it cannot throw its weight behind a renegade and an over-ambitious politician like Ajayi.
The party said that it opened its arms wide to the deputy governor believing that he meant well only to realise that Ajayi is inspired only by his selfish interest which is why he defected to the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
The party's chairman in Ondo, Dayo Ogungbenro, said supporters, members and the good people of the state are solidly behind their candidate, Eyitayo Jegede.
Ogungbenro said: “PDP will never work with a renegade and political turncoat whose ambition is not grounded in reality.
"It is a mark of hypocrisy for those who could not abide by the result of a demonstrably free and fair governorship primary to be planting fake news in the media suggesting that they are being sponsored by PDP governors in other states."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that after losing out in the gubernatorial primary in Ondo, Ajayi had defected to the ZLP.
Not only that, there were indications that Ajayi had also been adopted by the ZLP as its governorship candidate ahead of the poll.
This was confirmed on Sunday, August 2, by the spokesman of the party, Olatunde Felix, who said that “Barring last-minute changes, Ajayi would run as the party’s candidate on October 20."
Felix stated that the ZLP is fine-tuning moves to substitute the name of its earlier candidate, Rotimi Benjamin with that of Ajayi to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the poll.
The ZLP spokesman said: “The party was fine-tuning the details of Ajayi’s adoption and the substitution of the earlier candidate, Rotimi Benjamin, who was picked at the party primaries and whose name has been submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission."
