COVID-19: Nigeria nears 50,000 mark as 298 new cases are confirmed
The total number of confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria is near the 50,000 mark as the country recorded 298 new infections.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced the latest figure in a late-night tweet on Sunday, August 16.
The health agency explained that the new infections were reported in 16 states of the federation including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to the data released by the NCDC, Plateau recorded the highest number of new cases followed by Kaduna.
Below are the states that recorded new cases of COVID-19:

2. Kaduna - 49
3. Lagos - 47
4. Ogun - 18
5. Osun - 17
6. FCT - 15
7. Ondo - 14
8. Edo - 8
9. Oyo - 6
10. Akwa Ibom - 4
11. Cross River - 4
12. Borno - 3
13. Ekiti - 2
14. Bauchi - 1
15. Kano - 1
16. Rivers - 1
The NCDC stated that the total number of confirmed cases now stands at 49,068, with 36,497 patients discharged and 975 deaths.
Though the total number of confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in the country is near the 50,000 mark, Nigeria has continued to witness more recoveries.
Meanwhile, Veteran Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde on Saturday, August 15 revealed that she has tested positive for COVID-19.
Omotola, 42, popularly known as 'Omo Sexy' revealed the information via her verified Instagram account with almost 5 million followers.
Giving more information, she stated that although she is getting better, she is still in isolation.
In another report, the Akwa Ibom governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel has restated his administration’s commitment to decimating COVID-19 in the state even as schools resume for exit classes.
Governor Emmanuel stated this while taking delivery of five ambulance buses and 100,000 face masks donated to the state by a foundation at Government House, Uyo.
He said already, the effort of his administration in fighting the pandemic has paid off, adding that there will not be any complacency on the part of the state government.
He promised to deploy the ambulance buses to the different local government areas of the state in line with his administration’s policy of ensuring that every part of the state is well equipped for an eventual medical emergency.
He also hinted that the face masks will be sent to schools for students in exit classes who have resumed for examinations.
Still on health, Prof Jesse Otegbayo, the chief medical director, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has disclosed that the hospital has lost 18 persons out of the 159 COVID-19 patients it has treated so far.
Otegbayo made this known on Friday in Ibadan on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of the Josephus Foundation-aided new Infectious Disease Centre at UCH.
According to him, the coronavirus cases treated by the teaching hospital were severe with some of the patients having underlying health conditions.
He also revealed that the newly constructed Chief Tunde Afolabi Infectious Disease Centre donated by the Josephus Foundation was a 20-bed state-of-the-art centre.
According to him, it is also the single largest donation the hospital has received since the inception of the coronavirus pandemic.
