Man United's impressive Europa League campaign has come to a dramatic halt following their 2-1 defeat in the hands of Sevilla in Cologne on Sunday night, August 16.
United came into the match with hope of getting the perfect revenge over the La Liga side who also eliminated from the Champions League back in 2018 under then boss Jose Mourinho.
And the side got things off a flying start, with Bruno Fernandes scoring the Red Devils' opener inside nine minutes of game play from the penalty spot after Marcus Rashford was brought down in the area.
Fred nearly doubled the advantage six minutes later but sliced the ball wide of the near post to miss a glorious chance.
Suso went on to restore parity for Sevilla before the half-hour mark, slamming home at the far post, beating David de Gea who was in goal.
Fernandes nearly restored United's lead just seconds into the second half, only for Bono to deny who diverted the ball away.
The Old Trafford dwellers had another glorious chance in the 50th minute but Bono repalsed the danger once again.
With 12 minutes to stoppage time, De Jong, who was unmarked stabbed the ball past a helpless De Gea to net Sevilla's winner.
The closing stages of the encounter saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer make a triple substitution, with Dan James, Juan Mata and Fosu-Mensah being introduced.
However, the changes failed to bear any fruits, with the Spanish giants holding on to claim victory.
Julen Lopetegui's men will now take on the winner between Inter Milan and for a chance to win the European title.
