The main opposition party in Ondo state, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is in a dilemma over who becomes the running mate of its governorship candidate, Eyitayo Jegede.
The Nation reports that Jegede clinched the PDP ticket by polling 888 to defeat his closest rival, Agboola Ajayi, who got 657 votes.
Legit.ng gathered that aspirants that contested at the primary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are jostling to be named as running mate to Eyitayo Jegede for the October 10 governorship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Tuesday, August 18, as the deadline for the substitution of names of governorship candidates and deputies for the Ondo governorship election.
Jegede had earlier dropped the name of one of his aides, Olumide Ogunje, as his running mate but the pressure is on him to replace the name with one of the aspirants preferably from Ilaje local government area.
The newspaper said that sources said PDP elders in Ondo have dropped the named of three aspirants, Godday Erewa who polled 14 votes, Sola Ebiseni, 29 votes, and Banji Okunomo who scored 90.
They all hail from Ilaje local government.
The PDP candidate had earlier rejected pressure to pick Ajayi citing reasons that he needed somebody he could trust. Other names submitted were John Mafo and Tunde Akindehin.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that about 1,200 members of the Zenith Labour Party(ZLP) declared support for the re-election of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu over the expected defection of Agboola Ajayi.
It was reported that Ajayi who is the Ondo state deputy governor has recently been cleared to contest the October 10 governorship election on the platform of ZLP after his failure at the Peoples Democratic (PDP) primary.
Members of ZLP led by executives from the wards and local government across the state said they have pulled out of the party structure.
In another report, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stated that the defection of Agboola Ajayi from the party on Monday, August 10, is a sign of desperation in the deputy governor's political journey.
In a statement released by Kennedy lkantu Peretei, who is the party's publicity secretary, the PDP said Agboola's defection will not have any effect on the coming election.
