About 1,200 members of the Zenith Labour Party(ZLP) have declared support for the re-election of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu over the expected defection of Agboola Ajayi.
Ajayi who is the Ondo state deputy governor has recently been cleared to contest the October 10 governorship election on the platform of ZLP after his failure at the Peoples Democratic (PDP) primary.
The Nation reports that members of ZLP led by executives from the wards and local government across the state said they have pulled out of the party structure.
The ZLP members were led by Hon Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, a member of the House of Representatives representing Akoko North East/ North West Federal Constituency.
According to him, the governor has really worked well for all areas of the state and as a result of this deserves a second term in office.
They were received by Governor Akeredolu.
Speaking on the defection, Femi Ikoyi, state organising secretary of ZLP, said they want to add significant value to the re-election of Akeredolu.
According to him, they were the political engines of ZLP in Ondo state.
“We are the political engine of ZLP. Heard someone is coming to Akure. Well if he comes he will meet only the shell.”
Akeredolu also assured the ZLP members that they would not regret joining forces with him.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the PDP stated that the defection of Agboola Ajayi from the party on Monday, August 10, is a sign of desperation in the deputy governor's political journey.
In a statement released by Kennedy lkantu Peretei, who is the party's publicity secretary, the PDP said Agboola's defection will not have any effect on the coming election.
PDP stated that though it has not received the official letter of Ajayi's resignation, it will continue to wish the unsettled deputy governor well in his political journey.
The party accused Ajayi of showing desperation to govern the state and further added that his exit will not diminish the acceptability of the party in Ondo state.
The opposition party also berated the embattled deputy governor for abusing the honour and privilege given to him.
