The political uncertainty in Edo state was compounded on Saturday, after a former member of the House of Representatives, Sunday Karimi urged Edo state legislators to impeach Governor Godwin Obaseki immediately for allegedly breaching the constitution.
All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain who made the statement in Lokoja, Kogi state, pointed out that the Edo state governor should be impeached for preventing elected legislators from being sworn-in to perform their constitutional responsibilities for eighteen months.
Karimi stated that Governor Obaseki must not be allowed to go unpunished for his abuse of power.
“Governor Goodwin Obaseki is not fit to be in power; and must be impeached, to serve as deterrent to others and to protect the nation’s democracy,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Bola Tinubu, a national leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) has accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of committing the gravest possible assault on constitutional democracy and rule of law.
The APC chieftain made the accusation on Friday, August 7, when reacting to the unfolding political developments in Edo state, The Nation reported.
He alleged that the Edo state governor made a mockery of the country’s constitution by blocking the timely inauguration of two-thirds of the elected members of the state House of Assembly.
Tinubu also accused the Obaseki of resorting to dictatorship and escalating violence and tension in the state. He pointed out that the blockade of the Edo House of Assembly and removal of its roof under the guise of repairs was wrong.
In another report, the governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike has alleged that there is an ongoing plot in the Edo state House of Assembly to impeach Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Wike who made the allegation on Friday, August 7, at the government house in Port Harcourt, also accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of being behind the purported impeachment of the speaker, Edo House of Assembly and his deputy, The Sun reported.
He said the APC orchestrated the crisis in the Edo House of Assembly to lay the foundation for the impeachment of Obaseki.
