Amid defection speculations, the deputy governor of Ondo state, Agboola Ajayi, has stayed away from the state congress of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).
The Nation reports that voting has, however, commenced at the PDP state congress.
The outgoing acting chairman of the Ondo PDP, Engr. Clement Faboyede, said he expected the winners to embrace all contestants.
He said the peaceful conduct of the exercise showed the PDP was different from other political parties.
Faboyede stated the party wants to go into the governorship a united family.
However, the deputy governor who left the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the PDP from in June but refused to resign from office.
He contested the party's governorship primary but lost to Eyitayo Jegede.
Since his loss, there have been speculations that the deputy governor would be leaving the PDP again to pursue his governorship ambition in the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).
Ajayi’s spokesperson, Babatope Okeowo, recently said media reports claiming that the deputy governor has defected to the ZLP are untrue.
According to Okeowo, the deputy governor was under intense pressure from his supporters to contest for the election but is yet to take a decision on his next political move.
However, his campaign posters of the ZLP have surfaced even though he is yet to resign from the PDP.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the PDP appealed to Ajayi not to defect to the Zenith Labour Party.
”We are seriously appealing to the deputy governor not to dump the party at this crucial time and at the same time, the party’s candidate is battling with leaders of his choice of deputy,” a party leader was quoted to have said.
Another report indicates that the emergence of Eyitayo Jegede as the Ondo PDP candidate has created a fracture in the party as five governors have thrown their weight behind the embattled Ondo deputy governor.
Jegede's victory was said to have been made easier because he enjoyed the backing of former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, who is reported to be eyeing the 2023 presidential slot of the opposition party.
But the political plot that saw Ajayi axed out of the guber race was said to have angered five PDP governors who are now massively throwing weight behind the deputy governor to contest on the platform of ZLP.
