Following a bullion van robbery attack in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi state, police detectives have arrested seven suspected armed robbers including a serving and dismissed soldiers in connection with the robbery.
PRNigeria reports that the bullion van was coming from Enugu state when it was attacked in Abakaliki on July 29, while the suspects were nabbed a few days later in Delta state.
Legit.ng gathered that the robbery incident led to the death of four police officers, leaving others injured.
The newspaper disclosed that “during a serious manhunt by IRT detectives with technical Intelligence Support from TIU arrested one Alfred Robinson, 45 years of age, a native of Gelegele Town in Ovia North LGA of Edo state on 1/8/2020 in Asaba, Delta state.
"During an intensive follow up, six more gang members were arrested by IRT Detectives within 24hrs. They include Sgt Ayeni Samuel, a Nigerian Soldier serving in Ikeja, Cpl Emeka Harrison a dismissed Soldier who had served in Maiduguri and Emeka Illo, the sponsor of the operation.
"Others include Abuchi Elijah Aka “Chime D Mosquito” an Informant for the robbers and Ibanifiroi Ekiene a native of Tombia community."
The report noted that the firearms recovered from the criminals include 12 undetonated improvised explosives, one GPMG, six rifles, 51 AK-47 magazines, 1,620 ammunition, 2 robbed vehicles, breaking implements and charms.
"All suspects, upon interrogation, confessed to the Bullion Van Robbery in Ebonyi state. The suspects also confessed that 4 out of the rifles recovered belongs to the Policemen they killed during the robbery," the report said.
It was gathered that the suspects are assisting police to arrest their remaining gang members.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that gunmen killed four policemen escorting a bullion van in Ebonyi.
It was reported that the gunmen tried to intercept the van at Ezzamgbo junction, in Ohaukwu local government area.
The van was transporting money from Enugu to Abakaliki, Ebonyi state capital. The armed robbers were said to have fired at the escort van carrying the policemen.
Four of the police officers were allegedly killed immediately while two sustained carrying degrees of injuries.
The incident was reportedly confirmed by the state's police commissioner, Philip Maku. According to him, the robbers trailed the van from Enugu state.
He said the robbers were not able to loot the van as the driver managed to outmaneuver it out of the area.
“They damaged one of the tires of the bullion van but the driver was able to escape with the van. They could not give chase to the van as the driver was driving towards the military checkpoint ahead,” he had said.
The CP said the two injured policemen have been taken to hospital for treatment while the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary. Maku said the police launched a manhunt for the fleeing robbers.
