The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) released the list of the 17 candidates that qualified to take part in oncoming Ondo election in October.
According to the list shared by INEC on its official Twitter handle on Friday, July 31, 17 political parties are fielding their candidates in the polls.
The list is a follow-up to INEC's initial update on the continuing processes for the governorship election.
INEC had earlier revealed that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has to battle with 16 contenders from other opposition parties to retain his seat.
This was disclosed by INEC's national commissioner who is also the chairman of information and voter education committee, Festus Okoye, on Tuesday, July 28.
Sadly, there were no female contestants for the Ondo governorship position as all the candidates are men.
Legit.ng reported earlier that female supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo called on Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to pick a woman as his running mate ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial election.
The women, who are also members of Aketi group, made this demand during a solidarity rally on Tuesday, July 28, in Akure, the state capital.
However, the governor, Akeredolu, the next day, on Wednesday, July 29, chose a man as his running mate.
The running mate, Lucky Ayedatiwa, was picked by Governor Akeredolu during the swearing-in ceremony of his new aides.
A native of Ilaje local government area, Ayedatiwa was a commissioner in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
Meanwhile, Governor Akerdolu recently expressed confidence that he will defeat Eyitayo Jegede again.
The governor, who spoke in Abuja at the APC national secretariat where he collected his return certificate, however, admitted that the victory will not come easily.
Legit.ng recently compiled some facts about the two main contestants in the Ondo election Akeredolu and Jegede.
