- Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has admitted that defeating Eyitayo Jegede again may not be easy
- Akeredolu and Jegede are familiar foes as both contested against each other in 2016 with the former coasting to victory
- As Ondo guber election draws closer, Akeredolu gave assurance of victory over his lawyer colleague
With less than four months to the gubernatorial election in the state, Ondo governor Oluwarotimi Akerdolu has strongly stated that he will defeat Eyitayo Jegede again.
The governor, who spoke in Abuja at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national secretariat where he collected his return certificate, however, admitted that the victory will not come easily.
Legit.ng recalls, Governor Akeredolu clinched the APC ticket in style on Monday, July 20, by polling the highest number of vote in all the 18 local government areas of Ondo state.
Jegede, on the other hand, defeated seven other aspirants on Wednesday, July 22, including Agboola Ajayi, the embattled deputy governor of Ondo state who recently dumped APC to fight for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket.
The senior lawyer, who had served as the Ondo state commissioner of justice and attorney general, polled 888 votes to dislodge Ajayi who polled 657 votes.
The battle for the Ondo state most revered power seat will be exciting because both Governor Akeredolu who is now the ruling party's candidate and Jegede of PDP are not new to each other.
Akeredolu, who defeated Jegede in 2016, vowed to replicate that feat, adding that "I just pray that our campaign should be issue-based without violence".
“Jegede is my friend. We are colleagues and both members of the inner bar. I am sure that he knows that it will not be easy for him.
“Yes, it may not be easy for me to win, but by His grace, I am going to win,” Akeredolu said.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that for Jegede, the coast is not yet clear as the PDP flagbearer in the forthcoming Ondo election faces the tricky hurdle of bringing aggrieved members to terms.
On Monday, July 27, the former justice commissioner was at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja to collect his certificate of return and was accompanied by only Godday Erewa, one of the aspirants he defeated.
Members of the party's national working committee including Yemi Akinwonmi did not attend the event which is usually marked with celebrations.
