Legit.ng recalls that Eyitayo Jegede defeated seven other aspirants on Wednesday, July 22, including Agboola Ajayi, the embattled deputy governor of Ondo state who recently dumped APC to fight for the PDP's ticket.
The senior lawyer, who had served as the Ondo state commissioner of justice and attorney general, polled 888 votes to dislodge Ajayi who polled 657 votes.
On the other hand, Governor Akeredolu clinched the APC ticket in style on Monday, July 20, polling the highest number of vote in all the 18 local government areas of the state.
Apparently, the battle for the Ondo state most revered power seat will be exciting because both Governor Akeredolu who is now the ruling party's candidate and Jegede of PDP are not new to each other.
Both men, without any iota of doubt, are familiar foes - meaning the October guber election will be a renewal of rivalry between the two elephants.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng highlights 3 things to know about them.
1. Jegede and Akeredolu are SANs
Apart from politics, both Governor Akeredolu and Jegede are senior lawyers in the country with enviable records capped by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) titles.
Akeredolu, however, served as the president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in 2008. He ventured into politics after a long career as a solicitor.
2. Familiar foes: Both men contested again each other in 2016
The Ondo guber election scheduled for October will be the second time both Jegede and Akeredolu will throw hats into the ring in a guber race.
In 2016, Jegede contested against Akeredolu on the platform of the PDP but he lost the election.
Even, massive legal action from the electoral tribunal to the Supreme Court could not overturn Akeredolu's victory.
3. Another two-horse race
Like loyal pets, both Akeeredolu and Jegede did not leave the platforms which they both contested for Ondo guber election in 2016.
Akeredolu, who adopted the pseudonyms of Arakunrin after winning the 2016 election, is still seeking reelection on the same platform.
Jegede, despite the odds, is still going to give it a try again on the platform of the PDP.
