Lionel Messi breaks 11 crucial records despite failing to win 2019-20 La Liga title

Lionel Messi failed to win his 11th Spanish League title this season after Barcelona lost the silverware to rivals Real Madrid.

Los Blancos finished five points ahead of the Catalans at the end of the 2019-20 season despite the Camp Nou side topping the table with two points before football went on break in March.

However, losing the trophy did not stall the Argentine from breaking 11 major records which includes Cristiano Ronaldo's LaLiga hat-trick tally.

Although Messi and his employers are at loggerheads over some crucial issues around the club, that did not in any way affect his performances on the pitch.

Below is the list of 11 records Messi broke in the 2019-20 season and it's not even over yet.

- Goals Galore:

The 33-year-old scored 25 goals in 33 Spanish league appearances this campaign - earning him his seventh Pichichi award. A record no one has attained in the history of the league.

- Assists King:

The Argentine became the first player to create 21 assists in one single season - breaking the record held by former teammate Xavi since 2009.

- Vision 20-20

Lionel Messi also made history after becoming the first player in the Spanish league history to score 20 goals and assisted 20 other goals in one season.

- Player of the Month award

This season, Messi took his career Player of the Month award tally to seven - the most in La Liga history.

- 20 goals in the last 12 seasons

The Argentine superstar scored 20 goals in the last 12 seasons. Another record by the six-time Ballon d'Or winner.

- The 1,000 Club

Messi became the founding member of the 1,000 goal involvements club in 2019-20. No other footballer in history has officially managed that feat.

- Perpetual winner

Lionel Messi clinched his 500th La Liga victory - becoming the first player in Spanish football history to do so.

- Hat tricks record

The Barcelona captain leapfrogged Cristiano Ronaldo's previous La Liga hat-tricks record. The Portuguese forward had 34, but Messi now holds the fort with 36 hat tricks.

- El Clasico record:

Lionel Messi is also the only Barcelona player to have featured in 43 El Clasico in this recently concluded season.

- Never tiring:

The Argentine became the first ever to score in 15 successive Champions League seasons after scoring against Slavia Prague in October 2019.

- No Champions Fatigue

And Messi has now scored against more clubs in the Champions League history than any other player, with 34 victims.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Karim Benzema has been voted the best player of the just concluded La Liga season according to fans as the Frenchman scored 21 goals to help Real Madrid win their first title in three years.

And the Frenchman picked up 37% of the vote compared to Messi’s 31% despite the Argentine winning the Pichichi trophy after his 25 goals, while he also registered 21 assists.

Those 21 assists broke a La Liga record which had previously been set by former teammate Xavi.
