What was supposed to be a hearing on the controversies surrounding the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) turned into another political drama at the National Assembly on Tuesday, July 21.
A committee of the House of Reps had invited Chris Ngige, the minister of labour and employment over the NSITF issue.
However, during the hearing, a mild drama ensued between Ngige and one of the lawmakers, James Faleke, representing Ikeja federal constituency.
The drama was captured in a video clip by Channels TV which has gone viral on social media.
"You are like my junior brothers...except Faleke that they say he's up to 60, I don't know," says Ngige who had started the drama by claiming he was older than the lawmakers.
Faleke then cut in, saying "I'm sixty-plus...."
“So you are near my age, at least I am seven years older than you. I’m the same age with your mentor in Lagos, Asiwaju,” the minister responded, making reference to Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the APC and former Lagos governor.
“And I was governor with him at the same time. He was a senator, I was a senator. I am a two-time minister, he isn’t a two-time minister,” he added.
Again, Faleke interrupted saying “but he (Tinubu) won all his elections very well,” in an apparent reference to the controversies that trailed Ngige’s election as governor of Anambra state.
Responding again, Nigige said; “no problem about that, just like you won your own in Kogi state very well. And you are now the deputy governor and governor of Kogi state.”
Ngige was also referring to Faleke's failed bid to become the governor of Kogi state in 2015.
Faleke, who was running mate to Abubakar Audu, in the 2015 Kogi governorship election was denied the governorship ticket when Audu suddenly died as the election was almost completed.
Meanwhile, when Faleke asked the minister to respond to questions, he said: “I’m responding my friend, if you yab me, I yab you ten times. I am a Lagos boy, you are just a small boy in Lagos. Look at this Mushin boy, he’s talking with a VI boy. I lived in Victoria Island. Look at this Mushin boy from Kogi o.”
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the acting managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei, slumped while he was being grilled by lawmakers on Monday, July 20.
Pondei was cross-questioned by members of the House Committee on the NDDC over allegations of financial corruption to the tune of N40 billion.
Subsequently, he was quickly rushed to the hospital while the hearing went on a recess.
