Edet Okon Asim, the special adviser on biodiversity to Cross River state governor, Ben Ayade, has reportedly slumped and died inside his car.

According to information gathered from sources within the deceased family and colleagues, Asim died in his car around Eta Agbo neighbourhood in Calabar on Tuesday night, July 21, Daily Trust reports.

The former state commissioner for information was accused of raping a maid back in 2019 and the case is still ongoing in court.

Though the news publication went on to note that Asim’s body has been deposited in a morgue, however, Legit.ng could not independently verify the claim.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Nigerian musician and lawyer, Folarin Falana also known as Falz joined several other Nigerians to condemn the brutal rape and murder of a UniBen student Vera Omozuwa inside a church.

“It’s so exhausting to see injustice continue to thrive time after time. Every time we say NOT AGAIN, and then there is a new story. Enough is enough. It’s too disheartening. Justice must be served for the innocent souls we keep on losing,” he wrote on Twitter.

In a related development, a group, Say No Campaign, has stated that the federal government must take responsibility for increasing cases of rape in Nigeria.

Say No Campaign was reacting to the rape of a 12-year-old girl by 11 men, one of whom was 57-year-old man, in Jigawa state and another rape of a 22-year-old female student, by four men who gruesomely murdered her.

Both cases have been a trending topic on social media in Nigeria. A statement signed by the co-convener of Say No Campaign, Ezenwa Nwagwu on Monday, June 1, lamented that the Nigerian society has become acutely unsafe for children and worse off for the female gender.

In other news, the Nigerian upper legislative body has responded to the alarming rate of all forms of human abuse in the country majorly occasioned by sexual assault with a very stern decision.

The Senate on Tuesday, July 14, prescribed life imprisonment for anyone who is found guilty for the offence of defilement. The red chamber also removed gender restrictions formerly associated with the crime on the ground that anyone can be a victim of it.

The bill which also seeks to increase punishment for the offence of kidnapping was sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu (Lagos Central).
