As allegations against the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) continue to generate mounting fuss and fury across the country, Senator Shehu Sani has warned against the enemies within in the Niger Delta region.
Legit.ng recalls that NDDC is facing a turbulent time, with the commission said to have squandered billions of naira from the purse specifically marked for the oil-producing states.
The corruption mess in the commission digs deeper as the investigation by the House of Representatives on NDDC revealed that within a short period of time, over N50 billion has been mismanaged without any trace of visible projects in the Niger Delta region.
Joi Nunieh, a former managing director of NDDC, and Senator Godswill Akpabio who is the minister of Niger Delta have also been fingered in the whirlpool of corruption the commission is embroiled in.
On Tuesday, May 26, Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei, current NDDC managing director, declared that the NDDC budget in 2019 was inflated with about 500 fake projects by the National Assembly.
The NDDC probe gained more prominence after Nunieh, also a central character in the corruption conversation alleged that Akpabio committed a criminal offence punishable by life imprisonment for his role in the graft hitting the agency.
Amid unfolding dramas highlighting the House of Reps probe of the NDDC, Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the eighth Senate, said Niger Delta people must have now seen that their brothers are responsible for the plight of the region.
Sani, who wondered by Niger Delta region continues to wallow in poverty despite the federal government's efforts, posited that the enemies working against the region are sons of the soils.
"Niger Deltans used to think all their enemies are in Sokoto while they are actually in their shokoto," Sani said through a post on Twitter on Tuesday, July 21.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that what could have turned out to be a tragedy was prevented at the hearing of the House of Representatives committee on the NDDC on Monday, July 20, after Professor Pondei slumped while he was being grilled.
Pondei was cross-questioned by members of the House Committee on the NDDC over allegations of financial corruption to the tune of N40 billion.
