- Jose Mourinho seems unsatisfied with Man United giving De Gea a new deal last September
- The Spaniard signed new long-term deal until 2023
- The Portuguese feels United should have given Dean Henderson the nod ahead of their current number one
Jose Mourinho believes David De Gea was very lucky to have signed a new and improved contract with Manchester United.
The Spaniard was handed a new four-year deal by the Red Devils which will see him remain at the club until the summer of 2023.
However, the goalkeeper has been found wanting in his duties in a number of high profile matches, thereby costing the Old Trafford outfit to either drop points or lose the game eventually.
His recent was United's 3-1 defeat to Premier League rivals Chelsea in their FA Cup semifinal clash at Wembley Stadium.
The 29-year-old allowed Mason Mount's long-range shot slip through his arms after initially saving the goal-bound ball.
Daily Mail reports that some quarters have called on Ole Gunnar Solskajer to drop the former Atletico Madrid star for Dean Henderson who is currently on loan at Sheffield United at the moment.
Mourinho, who was in charge of the club for about two and a half years said United gave De Gea a new contract when they no longer needed a new goalkeeper.
He told Sky Sports last September: "De Gea? I think the moment when he signed his huge contract, is the moment I don't think United needs to pay as much as that to have him.
"One or two years ago he had the world after him, in this moment, the majority of the big doors were closed.
"The Real Madrid door is closed, they don't need a goalkeeper after [Thibaut] Courtois. Barcelona is closed with young and fantastic [Marc-Andre] Ter Stegen and Paris Saint-Germain is closed too as they signed Keylor Navas who is a very good goalkeeper."
Real Madrid were closed to landing the Spanish goalkeeper in 2015, but the deal collapsed on the transfer deadline day due to a fault with a fax machine.
De Gea was rated one of the best in the world back then, but Mourinho feels there was no 'pressure' of a big transfer, which led to De Gea getting a 'phenomenal' deal.
"I don't see the pressure,' he continued. 'Who is going to pay David these numbers? [De Gea] gets a phenomenal contract in a moment where he's a bit lucky to get it. Is he good? Yes, he's very good.
"David is much better on the line than coming out. I think in goal, his agility and technical level is second to none."
Meanwhile, Premier Legend Alan Shearer also feels the Spaniard should be dropped for Henderson when he returns from his loan.
Legit.ng earlier reported that David De Gea's errors have been the talking point in Man United's FA Cup loss to Chelsea, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed the Spaniard to bounce back.
The Norwegian boss admitted that the Red Devils' number one should have done better in the match that cost United a place in the FA Cup final.
Mason Mount's 25-yard effort beat De Gea to double Chelsea's lead and Olivier Giroud's earlier strike also had the Spanish shot-stopper questioned.
