Nigerian midfielder Azubuike Okechukwu has recorded his name in the history books of football after winning the Turkish Super Lig title with Istanbul Baseksehir.
This is a great career achievement for the 23-year-old former Bayelsa United captain who only joined the Turkish side in January this year on loan.
With only one game remaining to end the season in Turkey, Istanbul Baseksehir have been named new champions thanks to their 1-0 win on Sunday, July 19, over Kayserispor.
Okechukwu is now the fifth Nigerian player to win the Turkish Super Lig title which is an incredible achievement for the former youth international.
Emmanuel Emenike, former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo, Henry Onyekuru and Uche Okechukwu are the other Nigerian players who also won the Super Lig title.
The victory sees Basaksehir move seven points clear of second-place Trabzonspor who lost 4-3 at home to Konyaspor on Sunday, July 19.
Istanbul's latest win also ended the dominance of the Super Lig’s top teams Fenerbahce, Galatasaray and Besiktas who have 54 titles among them.
Meanwhile, there are reports that the new Turkish champions are currently talking with Pyramids FC over the possibility of signing Azubuike on a permanent deal this summer.
His latest achievement is also expected to help him get a call up to the Super Eagles of Nigeria under Gernot Rohr.
Rohr has made it clear many times that he will only be inviting players who are in form to the Super Eagles.
Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho left Deportivo La Coruna for a three-year move to Cypriot side APOEL FC in an incredible move for the Nigerian international.
Uzoho actually joined Deportivo in January 2019, but the Nigerian goalie was not given active playing time and was loaned to Anorthosis Famagusta.
And after spending six months at Famagusta, the Nigerian goalie returned to Deportivo, but was sent on loan again this time around to Omonia Nikosia.
The 21-year-old spent the whole of last season at Nikosia and was impressive in all the games he played for the side before he got injured.
