- INEC has finally reeled-out political candidates for the Edo election
- Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Godwin Obaseki were duly recognised as the flagbearers of their political parties
- The list implies that chances of substituting names of candidates by the political parties have been closed
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has published the final list of party candidates vying for the seat of Edo government house.
The electoral body made the announcement on Saturday, July 18, via a statement by its commissioner, Festus Okoye, who said the names of the party flagbearers have been published in its office in Edo.
INEC stated that with the final list, parties will no longer be able to make a substitution to the names earlier submitted, validating the body's declaration on Tuesday, June 30, which recognised both Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Governor Godwin Obaseki as the flagbearers of their respective parties.
"With the publication of the Final List of candidates, no Political Party can withdraw or substitute any of the nominated candidates or tamper with the List and particulars of the candidates in a manner inconsistent with the intendment of the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
"We urge Political Parties to pay close attention to the timelines stipulated in the Timetable and Schedule of Activities of the Commission as well as the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act," the commission said.
The electoral commission announced that 14 political parties will be vying for the soul of Edo state come September including thirteen (13) male candidates and one female.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that INEC raised an eyebrow against conflicting court verdicts and litigations that have characterised the pre-governorship election in Edo state.
Speaking on Tuesday, June 23, ahead of the poll slated for September, INEC commissioner, Festus Okoye, said the lawsuits and ploys are capable of disrupting the smooth conduct of the election and the parties' primaries.
