National Assembly clerk, commission disagree over retirement age

- The clerk of the National Assembly, Sani-Omolori, has rejected his retirement

The clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Mohammed Sani-Omolori, has disagreed with the National Assembly Service Commission over his retirement.

The commission had on Wednesday, July 15, issued a statement announcing Sani-Omolori’s retirement alongside 151 others.

The commission said workers who had attained the retirement age of 35 years in service or is 60 years of age, should leave.

Sani-Omolori, however, rejected the commission's directive and asked other affected workers to ignore the statement, The Nation reports.

Legit.ng gathers that the clerk said the commission has no power to take this kind of a decision.

Contrary to the position of the commission, Sani-Omolori said the revised conditions of service, passed by the eighth National Assembly put the retirement age of workers at 40 years of service and 65 years of age, whichever comes first.

He explained that the ninth National Assembly has not rescinded or abdicated the resolution of the previous assembly on the conditions of service of workers.

The clerk added that the commission lacks the powers to set aside the revised conditions of service passed by the eighth National Assembly.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Senate has urged the federal government to raise the age limit attached to job vacancies in the country.

The lawmakers made the demand on Wednesday, July 15, following a motion raised by Senator Ibrahim Gobir during plenary.

During the debate on the motion titled urgent need to review the age barrier during recruitment and employment, Gobir argued that the age cap for jobs advertised by both government and private sector excludes many competent applicants.

He pointed out that many graduates who spend about 10 years or more seeking jobs are often excluded from employment applications due to no fault of theirs.

The senator said many of these individuals have now resorted to falsifying their age to fall within the age limit for them to be gainfully employed.

Another lawmaker, Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, questioned why the federal government which had placed an embargo on its employment for over 13 years would expect graduates to remain at the age they were during the period of the embargo.

After deliberations, the Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, urged the ministry of labour, employment and productivity to address the matter.

Meanwhile, a renowned policy and development expert, Gbolahan Agbaje, has commended the minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, Hajiya Saddiya Farooq, over the massive registration of N-Power batch C.
