Virgil Van Dijk had an awful day in the Premier League on Wednesday night when Arsenal came from behind to defeat champions Liverpool 2-1.

Statistics have now shown that the errors made by the defender against the Gunners is far more than what Manchester United’s Harry Maguire has made all season.

The Dutch defender terribly gifted the ball away in the first half to let Alexandre Lacazette round the Reds’ goalkeeper to slot home an equalizer.

Statistics have it that that was the first by the defender which led directly into a goal, but he is said to have made some pretty high profile errors recently.

According to stats site WhoScored.com, that game against the Saints was the Harry Maguire's had his worst performances of the season, as he got a 6.28 rating.

However Van Dijk was given a worse score for Wednesday night's game, as his error contributed to getting just 5.71 out of 10.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have increased their chances of taking part in Europa League next season following their surprise 2-1 win over champions Liverpool on Wednesday night, July 15.

Liverpool dominated the opening exchanges of the encounter and took the lead in the 20th minute through Sadio Mane, slamming home after Robertson slipped a simple ball across goal.

Alexander Lacazette equalised for the home side in the 32nd minute, taking advantage of a defensive gaffe involving Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker.

Another fiasco at the back just a minute to half time saw Nelson hand Arsenal the lead as he steered a fine finish across the keeper into the bottom left.

The Gunners had to come from a goal down at the Emirates to stage a dramatic comeback to secure all the three points.

The defeat was Liverpool's third of the season in the league following their 3-0 loss to Watford back in March. Arsenal, meanwhile, remain ninth on the league standings with 53 points, three off a Europa League place.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has now come out to admit his side is facing an uphill task to make an appearance in Europe next season.

“Point-wise it is a massive blow because we know the results this weekend. But we will keep trying while we have hope: one way in the league, the other way in the FA Cup," he said.

Arteta was quoted saying after the match. He, however, called on his wards to step up in the three remaining matches to end the season to ensure the north London outfit wraps up the campaign on a high.
