The war on corruption by the President Buhari administration has consumed another victim as Ezekiel Bala Agaba, a former executive director at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) was sentenced by a court to seven years imprisonment on Wednesday, July 15.
The former executive director was sentenced by a Federal High Court in Lagos for laundering N1.5 billion, The Nation reported.
Agaba was accused of looting money from the agency. He is also reportedly facing another trial alongside Patrick Akpobolokemi, a former director-general of NIMASA.
In another news report, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said the anti-graft war by the current administration is facing resistance from some suspected corrupt individuals.
Osinbajo made the disclosure on Tuesday, July 14, at the 20th anniversary Africa regional webinar of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Daily Trust reported.
The vice president said corrupt people always fight back because they have the resources to do so.
He pointed out that one of the tactics employed by corrupt people in fighting back is by sponsoring outrageous allegations against persons perceived to be fighting corruption through social media.
Meanwhile, following the suspension and ongoing probe of the former acting chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, the presidency has reiterated President Muhammadu Buhari's commitment to rid Nigeria of corruption and corrupt practices.
Legit.ng reported that the presidency made the assurance in its reply to the barrage of criticisms that greeted Magu's probe, especially from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The presidency said President Buhari, who doubles as African Union (AU) anti-corruption champion in Africa, would not be deterred by baseless criticisms by the opposition in his determination to eradicate rampant, chronic corruption.
Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, who gave this position in a chat with State House correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday, July 14, was responding to issues raised by the PDP since the beginning of the interrogation of the suspended acting chairman of EFCC.
