- The PDP has reacted to the alleged mass defection that has hit the APC in Edo state
- The opposition expressed excitement adding that this marks the end for APC and its governorship candidate
- PDP spokesperson said the party has been receiving reports of massive surge for membership cards
Ahead of the Edo state gubernatorial poll, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed excitement concerning the “mass defection” from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to its fold, The Nation reports.
Kola Ologbondiyan, the spokesman for the PDP, in a statement on Monday, July 13, said the alleged mass defection marked the end-of-the-road for both the ruling APC and its candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
Ologbondiyan went on to note that following the increasing popularity of Governor Godwin Obaseki and the PDP across the state, they been receiving reports of massive surge for PDP membership cards daily.
The party said it acknowledged the solidarity of thousands of members of other parties, who had adopted and expressed support for its candidate, Governor Godwin Obaseki, as their preferred choice for the election.
He said: “Our party has been receiving daily reports of massive surge for PDP membership cards in our state, local government and ward offices, following the soaring popularity of Governor Obaseki and the PDP across the state.
“The PDP notes that with the gale of defection and mass flow of support from the people of Edo State, the APC candidate will soon look back and find himself standing alone."
Following the massive surge for membership cards, PDP has directed its ward offices across the state to expand their registration capacity to ensure adequate accommodation for all Edo people.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the PDP in Edo state declared that it would make rigging impossible for the APC and its candidate during the incoming governorship election in the state.
The party in a thread of tweet on Thursday, July 9, said that the APC should desist from its plots to rig the Edo election, saying that the people of the state would firmly resist it.
The party asked members of the APC to blame themselves for their current woes and get ready to accept their inevitable crushing defeat at the poll.
In a related development, Ize-Iyamu alleged that the PDP lacks tact and strategy. The Edo APC candidate wondered why the PDP would decide to field Obaseki as its candidate after condemning him as a non-achiever.
Ize-Iyamu's words were contained in a statement by the spokesperson of his campaign organisation, Prince John Mayaki. He said it was confusing for PDP leaders to be singing Obaseki’s praise after describing him as a failure who deceived the courts and the INEC with counterfeit credentials.
