The governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have commenced the process of replacing Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state.

Until his defection to the PDP, Obaseki was the vice chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), the umbrella association of the APC governors.

New Telegraph reports that the PGF's vacant position is said to be zoned to the South, since the chairman of the forum, the Kebbi state governor, Atiku Bagudu, is from the North.

The newspaper states that the governor of Imo state, Senator Hope Uzodinma, is one of those who have shown interest in the vacant position.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a former governor of Borno state, Ali Modu Sheriff on Thursday, July 9, visited the national secretariat of the ruling APC, sparking rumours that he planned to contest for the office of the national chairman of the party.

Sheriff is a former senator and former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A number of media reports had last week reported that some forces loyal to Sheriff within the APC were scheming to tinker with the zoning formula, in which case the office of the national chairman would be zoned to the north ahead of the party’s national convention.

Sheriff arrived at the secretariat at about 4.15 pm but declined to speak to journalists on his mission and left at about 4.30pm.

According to Sahara Reporters, Sheriff is already reaching out to critical stakeholders in the party in relation to his ambition to contest as the APC national chairman.

The visit of Sheriff to the APC national secretariat is already a trending topic on social media.

Mamuzo Adums wrote on Twitter: "I just saw a rumour of Ali Modu Sheriff secretly vying for the chairmanship of the APC. If that's true, I am strongly behind him. He has the capacity to do the job. Able chair."

Taiye Best wrote on Nairaland: "Ali Modu Sheriff has finished work in the PDP, so maybe he is back to jeopardize the APC. He wants to start another scenario he brought up with the PDP chairmanship before the 2015 election. He needs to be stopped."
