Coronavirus: Wike sacks permanent secretary for flouting COVID-19 guidelines

The governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, has reportedly sacked a Permanent Secretary, Sunny Okere, for flouting and obstructing the enforcement of the COVID-19 guidelines.

The Nation reports that Governor Wike said the sacked senior civil servant chased away health ministry officials who went to enforce the established COVID-19 guidelines on public burials at Oyigbo.

Legit.ng gathers that this was contained in a statement signed by the state's commissioner for information, Paulinus Nsirim, on Wednesday, July 8.

Wike said his action against the permanent secretary would serve as a lesson to all other public officers. He also appealed to residents of the state to adhere to relevant Covid-19 guidelines.

He said with the lifting of the ban on inter-state travels and domestic flights, residents must be cautious in relating with friends and relatives coming from high-risk states.

The Rivers state governor also announced that a Joint Taskforce made up of security and civilian personnel has been set up to enforce the wearing of face masks.

Meanwhile, all the staff of Rivers state Government House have been directed by Governor Wike to go for COVID-19 testing to know their status.

Governor Wike disclosed this in Port Harcourt, on Monday, June 29, while receiving the donation of three ambulances from a foundation to the state.

According to a statement by the commissioner for information and communications, Wike said the directive was to let the people of Rivers know that this is not the kind of sickness to be ashamed of.

The south-south governor went on to note that despite the fact that the number will increase with the test, Rivers state government is willing to continue COVID-19 testing.

He also added that though they don't know who a carrier can be, his government is going to save as many as they can.
