The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has dismissed the claim by Governor Yahaya Bello that ten PDP governors are on their way to the All Progressive Congress (APC).
The party in a statement sent to journalists on Saturday, June 27, described Bello's comment as false, adding that no PDP governor is planning to defect to the APC.
Governor Bello, had while appearing on a TV programme on Friday, June 26, claimed that about 10 PDP governors were set to join the ruling APC.
The statement signed by the director-general of the PDP Governors Forum, C. I. D Maduabum, said Bello’s statement “does not merit any response.”
It continued: “It is obvious that this is a diversionary tactic to shore up the sagging morale of APC members who are ruing the loss of yet another state governor, Godwin Obaseki of Edo state to the PDP.
“There is no attraction whatsoever for any PDP member not to talk of a PDP governor to join the APC, a party bedevilled by crises.”
Governor Bello and his colleagues in the APC practically relocated to the nation's capital Abuja this week to resolve the crisis in the ruling party.
The APC had been struggling to contain competing forces within its domain, which was threatening the unity of the governing party.
An intervention by the governors and the president, however, rescued the party from the brink.
Governor Bello had in the interview expressed confidence that the APC will continue to wax stronger notwithstanding the crisis threatening the soul of the party in recent times.
According to him, the party will not disintegrate as being insinuated in some quarters.
His words: “What existed in the APC in the last few weeks was a misunderstanding among members expressing themselves in different ways and the leader of our party; the leader of the nation, President Muhammadu Buhari came in and called the children together and has addressed the matter.”
