- APC's national executive council meeting is scheduled to hold by 12 pm on Thursday, June 25
- The virtual meeting was called by the embattled factional chairman of the ruling party, Victor Giadom
- President Buhari who backed Giadom as acting national chairman will be in attendance
Following the leadership battle within the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party's national executive council meeting will begin by 12 noon on Thursday, June 25, Premium Times reports.
Legit.ng gathered that the virtual meeting was called by Victor Giadom, the deputy national secretary of the party who has assumed the role of acting national chairman.
Though the agenda of the meeting is not yet known, Buhari is scheduled to be in attendance.
Nigeria's number one citizen also called on governors elected on the ruling party's platform and other members of the council to participate in the virtual meeting.
APC spokesperson Lanre Issa-Onilu has not given any indication he would be attending the meeting and is yet to comment on it at the time of filing this report.
This is coming hours after President Buhari openly declared support for Giadom as acting national chairman of the party.
Buhari finally made his position known by backing Giadom in a tweet by his presidential spokesman Garba Shehu on Wednesday, June 24.
According to Shehu, the president took the position after receiving convincing advice on the position of the law as far as the party is concerned. Buhari consequently declared that the law is on the side of Giadom as the acting national chairman.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Prince Hilliard Eta-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC said President Buhari is not aware of the invitation for the NEC meeting, asking members of the party to disregard the meeting.
In a statement signed on Wednesday, June 24, by the acting national secretariat of the APC, Architect Waziri Bulama, the party said the convener of the meeting has been suspended by the Rivers state chapter of the party.
Bulama said Giadom cannot summon a meeting on that date because under the party's constitution only the national secretary can do so pursuant to Article 14.3 of the APC constitution.
In a related development, prominent law professor, Itse Sagay (SAN), has advised President Buhari not to attend the APC NEC meeting called by Giadom.
Sagay who is the chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) gave at least three reasons why the president should not attend the meeting.
