Chris Azebamwam, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in Edo, is confident that Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu will emerge the governor of the state after the September 19 governorship election.
Azebamwan made this known in a statement sent to journalists on Tuesday, June 23 in reaction to Ize-Iyamu's emergence as the APC candidate for the election.
The APC chieftain also mocked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying the party is still mystified by the current political trajectory of Ize-Iyamu.
His words: “The first and most cogent point is that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is not the reason their flustered new intake, outgoing Governor Godwin Obaseki is running from pillar to post to save his head in the election.
“The truth is that Obaseki is a misfit that has been roundly rejected by the people, through whom God the Almighty has raised Pastor Ize-Iyamu as a worthy replacement.
“For a man, who has spent nearly four years in office without something tangible to his name outside fighting both real and perceived enemies, it was only a matter of time before Obaseki was shown the way out and it was also simple logic that he had since shut the door of re-election against himself.
“We recall that not only did the PDP say a badly disapproved Obaseki, who is now its beautiful bride had stolen all of Edo’s money; it gave a blanket remark that the governor was a total failure. This was just six months ago.”
The Edo APC chairman asked the PDP to accept that the battle for the governorship position is already lost and won.
“Obaseki’s fate has been sealed by God, and the good people of Edo state. Unanimously, our people have said it, loud and clear, enough of the last four years of misfortune as represented by the Obaseki administration.
“The PDP can dust up their generally precluded oddball, perhaps, for their other roguish uses. But, definitely not the governorship seat, which has been sanctioned by God and man as Pastor Ize-Iyamu’s,” he added.
Similarly, Pastor Ize-Iyamu says his emergence as the APC candidate for the Edo governorship election is due to the party's insistence on adherence to its constitution.
Ize-Iyamu made the assertion in a note he wrote and shared to media houses after his emergence as the APC candidate for the forthcoming election.
He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for not interfering in the process, saying his fatherly disposition and democratic stance “set the stage for a free and transparent contestation devoid of institutional bias, favouritism, or imposition of any kind.”
He also hailed the national leadership of the APC for the courage displayed “and the commitment to democratic ideals that have distinguished our party and made it appealing to millions of Nigerians across the country.”
