The re-election bid of Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, has become tougher as Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu emerged the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to The Nation, Ize-Iyamu on Monday, June 22, pulled a total of 27,838 votes to beat Pius Odubu and Osaro Obazee who got 3,776 and 2,751 votes respectively.
He was declared the winner of the highly anticipated poll by Imo state governor, Hope Uzodinma to become the ruling party's flagbearer in the governorship election scheduled for September.
Recall that the ruling party started its guber primary election in the south-south state amid an internal crisis that has recently left it in shambles.
Legit.ng gathers that the election was held in 192 wards of 18 local government areas in the state, with the ruling party using direct mode which allows all card-carrying members to determine who bears APC flag.
Party officials and delegates arrived early for the exercise at the APC secretariat in Ward 7, Oredo local government area in Benin city, the state capital.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that as aspirants strive to outscore one another ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Edo state, Ize-Iyamu maintained that the exit of Governor Obaseki from APC has handed him a victory boost.
Ize-Iyamu expressed his confidence ahead of the Edo state election scheduled for September amid specks of dust raised by the internal unrest deluging the ruling party in the south-south state.
He claimed that there are a lot of party leaders and members across the 192 wards who have endorsed his candidacy.
The APC aspirant made this known in an interview with The Nation on Saturday, June 20, saying that Obaseki's disqualification was not a ploy to clear ways for him.
In other news from Edo state, Ize-Iyamu has called on the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) to quarantine Governor Obaseki and his supporters.
Ize-Iyamu was reacting to the massive crowd that accompanied the governor to get his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) membership card at the party secretariat in Benin on Friday, June 19.
Speaking through his campaign organisation, the APC guber candidate said all those who were at the defection meeting should be quarantined because they flouted the physical distancing regulation established by the state governor.
