As the world continues to celebrate Father’s Day, Joe Tole of New York City is one whose story is yet another reason why fathers should be commemorated.
Joe Tole, 60, has spent the past decade of his life raising six sons he adopted.
According to blacknews.com, the kind-hearted man is set to adopt his seventh son, 20-year-old Jhon from the Dominican Republic who has learning difficulties.
Growing up in a foster home himself, the former guidance counsellor is able to relate to the struggles of the needy and underserved.
Joe’s childhood struggles inspired him to reach out and help others who find themselves in similar situations today.
He prefers to adopt much older people because ‘‘adopting an older child gives hope to somebody who probably doesn’t have much hope at that moment.''
In 2009, Joe adopted his first son, Xavier, who was then 17 years old and in 2010, he took in Johnathan, followed by Ronny, and Creemel.
They were followed by Kamren in 2017 and Cinsere in 2018. Toles is now about to also become a legal father to Jhon.
His decision to help people struggling with homelessness has not been free of challenges especially regarding issues of puberty and behaviour.
He admits that: “It takes work, but I make the effort in nurturing the relationships.”
Aside providing security and stability to his adopted sons, he has a foundation which he established in 2005 called The Joseph Toles Foundation.
Joe's foundation assists foster kids in getting sponsorship to summer camps and other activities.
