The governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki, has arrived the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for screening, The Nation reports.
Recall that Obaseki joined the party on Friday, June 19, and got a waiver to contest for elective posts.
Hours after his defection, Governor Obaseki on Friday expressed gratitude to the PDP in Edo state for its warm reception.
Speaking to PDP officials in Edo, Obaseki said that the love, goodwill, energy and support he observes in the party are what he needs to take it to victory in the governorship election.
The Edo governor made this remarks after the PDP granted him and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, a waiver ahead of the election.
Obaseki said that he is poised to take the party's chapter in Edo not only to victory, but also to the next level of progress and growth that will be unmatched in Nigeria.
He boasted: “I am prepared to provide leadership that will lead this party to victory. I am prepared to provide leadership that will not only put PDP into office in Edo State but as a ruling party in Edo state."
Meanwhile, the final defection of Governor Obaseki to the PDP has elicited a reaction from one of the top governorship aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osagie Ize-Iyamu.
Reacting to the development, Ize-Iyamu said in an interview with The Sun that Obaseki had attempted to impose himself as the APC governorship candidate before his disqualification.
Legit.ng gathers that Ize-Iyamu also expressed confidence that he will defeat the Edo state governor in the Septemeber poll.
Though both Ize-Iyamu and Obaseki have not emerged the candidates of their respective parties, there are strong indications that the duo will be facing each other in the forthcoming poll.
Ize-Iyamu said the exit of Obaseki was a welcome development in the APC, adding that the party is now on the mission to reunite members ahead of the poll.
