Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has called on the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) to quarantine Governor Godwin Obaseki and his supporters.
Ize-Iyamu was reacting to the massive crowd that accompanied the governor to get his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) membership card at the party secretariat in Benin on Friday, June 19.
Speaking through his campaign organisation, the All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant said all those who were at the defection meeting should be quarantined because they flouted the physical distancing regulation established by the state governor.
A statement by the campaign spokesman, John Mayaki, said: “We observed with great concern the dangerous and reckless actions of the governor and his supporters at the venue of his defection.
“Mr Godwin Obaseki assembled hundreds of Edo youths that his administration failed to gainfully engage following his failure to create 200,000 jobs as promised and assigned them the demeaning task of singing his praises at great risk to their health during a pandemic.
“Apart from violating the guidelines of the Presidential Task-Force on COVID-19 on social gathering, Obaseki also openly disregarded the stipulations of his ill-conceived gazette which, among other things.
“We call on the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to aid the NCDC in the commencement of an immediate identification, tracing, and arrest of everyone present at the event for immediate quarantine at nearby isolation centres.”
As Edo state prepares for the governorship election, experts say votes will be divided in the Benin axis since Obaseki and Ize Iyamu are from the area.
Edo central is likely to vote for Obaseki because it's their turn to produce the next governor after him.
Edo north will be divided between loyalists of suspended APC national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and Obaseki's deputy, Phillip Shaiubu.
Ize-Iyamu a former chief of staff and secretary to the Edo state government wields a lot of political influence in the state.
Obaseki, on the other hand, a new entrant into politics, has the support of the ordinary people who believes voting Ize-Iyamu is a vote for Oshiomhole through the back door.
Meanwhile, Governor Obaseki is already in Abuja for screening ahead of the much-talked-about governorship election.
According to Austin Akobundu, the PDP's national organising secretary, the screening exercise for Obaseki will be conducted on Saturday, June 20.
