Fake DSS officer arrested for stealing at EFCC event

- The EFCC has nabbed a man who stole an event organised by the anti-corruption agency last year

- The man had posed as a DSS officer to beat the security at the event held in Abuja

- President Muhammadu Buhari was at the event as a special guest of honour

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested a 32-year old man, Boniface Oburuku for stealing a handbag at an event organised by the commission.

He stole the bag which belonged to a guest from Mauritius at the ceremony which was attended by President Muhammadu Buhari and other international dignitaries in June 2019.

According to a statement by EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale, “The bag contained the female victim’s two Samsung mobile phones, an international passport, United States Dollars, Nigerian and Mauritian currencies.”

The statement said: “Oburuku committed the crime on June 11, 2019 at an event organised by the EFCC to mark the year’s National Democracy Day and Anti-Corruption Summit at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, which had in attendance, President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerian security chiefs, respected citizens and global leaders.

”For over one year, the suspect has been on the commission’s watch list and was eventually arrested in Lagos a few days ago.”

Meanwhile, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Comrade Ambrose Nwaogwugwu has dragged the DSS to court.

In a suit filed by his team of attorneys led by Chief Mike Ahamba SAN, the politician is seeking among other prayers, a declaration that his continued detention is unlawful, wrongful, unconstitutional and a flagrant breach of his fundamental rights as guaranteed by the Constitution of Nigeria.

The suit is also seeking an injunction restraining the DSS from continued harassment, arrest, intimidation and detention of Nwaogwugwu.
