A new development has emerged in the unfolding political developments in Edo state as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)'s chairman in Edo state, Tony Azegbemi, said the membership card of Governor Godwin Obaseki is ready.
Daily Trust reports that Azegbemi said Governor Obaseki will join the opposition PDP any time he returns to Edo from Abuja, adding that he has already registered in his ward.
Azegbemi said the PDP is excited to welcome Obaseki to the umbrella family.
The newspaper notes that Obaseki’s spokesman, Crusoe Osagie, said he cannot confirm the claim because the governor has not made any pronouncement.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Governor Obaseki met with the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Aminu Tambuwal, and the PDP national chairman, Uche Secondus, on Wednesday, June 17.
The meeting was allegedly held at the Abuja residence of the Rivers state governor, Nyesome Wike.
The online news media said the two PDP leaders and some others in attendance gave the embattled Edo state governor an assurance of their support.
A source whose name was not mentioned was quoted to have said that the meeting was held after a virtual meeting with PDP governors across the country.
Legit.ng gathers that the fates of Obaseki's deputy, Philip Shaibu, and others who may follow Obaseki to the PDP were also discussed.
Another related report indicates that the PDP is set to finally decide whether or not it should give Governor Obaseki its guber ticket in the forthcoming Edo election.
The leaders of the main opposition party are reportedly set to meet on Thursday, June 18, to take the final decision.
Meanwhile, Nigerians, via a social media post by Legit.ng have advised Governor Obaseki on what to do after his disqualification by the APC.
Many cautioned the Edo state governor from defecting to the PDP while others said joining the lead opposition party is the best move for him.
Obaseki recently announced his resignation from the APC but is yet to disclose his next political move.
Daniel Ajayi said he would advise Obaseki to remain in APC despite his disqualification.
Ajayi said: "I would advice him to remain in APC! Reason, he should study the case of Ameka Uwosu at supreme court that you can't be a candidate of two different political party in one election.
"Going by this judgment he cannot be a governor through PDP or any other party in this context. He's already a contestant in APC having purchased expression of interest and also undergone screening. He should be wise!"
In his own reaction, Olonitola Felix Crystal said he would advise the Edo state governor to "be careful with any party he finally joins".
"I will tell him to be careful with any party he finally joins, because everyone already knows he has a missing 'i'. The day he tries what he did with Oshiomole, the party will remind him of his missing 'i'. Obasek is not Obaseki. Be warned," Crystal commented.
"If he decides to run on another platform, he should just settle for his 3 credit o' level result. Using any of the higher and defective 'certificates' will certainly backfire."
