Following Governor Godwin Obaseki's resignation from the APC, the leadership of the PDP is reportedly set to meet to decide his fate.
According to The Nation, the Peoples Democratic Party leaders will meet on Thursday, June 18, over the development.
Citing sources in the main party whose names were not disclosed, the newspaper stated that the meeting will consider the reports from the various leaders of the party that Governor Obaseki has met with in the last few days.
Recall that Obaseki had met with Governors Nyesom Wike of Rivers state and Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom state.
Obaseki resigned from the All Progressives Congress after he was disqualified from participating in its primary. His deputy Phillip Shaibu has also followed suit.
The embattled Edo state governor has allegedly reached out to the PDP national chairman Uche Secondus and Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state who is the PDP governors’ forum chairman in a bid to get the party's governorship ticket.
Legit.ng gathers that the PDP will explore in the meeting how it can give Obaseki the governorship ticket without causing another crisis in the party.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Adams Oshiomhole had spoken on the defection of his successor Governor Obaseki from the APC.
The suspended national chairman of the ruling party described the development as “good riddance to bad rubbish".
He also vowed that the ruling party will go to court due to the discrepancies in Obaseki's certificate should PDP field in the governor as its flagbearer in the forthcoming election.
“Fortunate enough, it was the PDP that exposed him in 2016. PDP filed a case at the Federal High Court amplifying every forgery segments in his certificate. APC just managed to escape that because PDP filed out of time and the case was struck out.
“Now, the case has life, so, when they field him, we will be at the court to adopt what PDP filed before the court against him with additional evidence we now have against him. So, we can’t wait to have PDP field him as their candidate," Oshiomhole said.
The former governor has been at warpath with his successor over what many analysts term as fall of interest.
In another related news, emerging reports have confirmed that with the country waiting for Obaseki to reveal his next plan after resignation, PDP has delayed its screening results on the aspirants.
Legit.ng reported that PDP had on Friday, June 5, screened three aspirants namely Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, Gideon Ikhine and Kenneth Imasuagbon.
