All Progressives Congress (APC) vice-chairman, south-south, Prince Hilliard Eta, has declared himself the new acting national chairman of the ruling party.
Eta who is from Cross River state, says he is taking over the reins of the party as confusion over the authentic leader of the party continues.
After announcing himself as the party national chairman, Eta appointed Imo state governor, Hope Uzodinma as the Edo primary election chairman.
He also declared as vacant the office of the deputy national secretary of the party, which was occupied by Chief Victor Giadom.
Giadom, from Rivers state, had earlier declared himself the acting chairman of the party.
At a press briefing in the party headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, June 17, Giadom said: As your acting national chairman and presiding office in the National Working Committee (NWC), we, therefore, cancel the decision of the screening and appeal committee of the former chairman, in the Edo primaries.
A source at the APC quarters told Legit.ng that the battle is now firmly between loyalists of Oshiomhole and that of some party governors in the ruling party.
The source said: “Eta is only trying to cause confusion. He is a loyalist of Oshiomhole. When they saw that Giadom announced himself as chairman, and rightly so, they drafted Eta into the whole thing to cause confusion.
“They also want to uphold their illegality in Edo state, that's why he quickly announced Governor Uzodinma to preside over the Edo primary election.
“Don't forget that Uzodinma is one of the few governors supporting Oshiomhole. In fact, he frustrated his colleagues' effort to send Oshiomhole away when they tried to get President Buhari's buy-in into their plot.”
Eta was appointed by the Ajimobi-led NWC to take over the reins of the party since the former governor of Oyo state is absent.
Ajimobi is said to be very ill at the moment with COVID-19 complications.
Recall that the NWC of the APC announced that Senator Abiola Ajimobi will serve as the party’s acting national chairman on Tuesday, June 16.
The NWC made the decision after the Appeal Court upheld the suspension of the APC’s national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole by an FCT High Court.
