The All Progressives Congress (APC) has claimed that it has no official notice or knowledge of the recent defection of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo from the party.

Responding to questions on the governor's decision to leave APC, the ruling party's national publicity secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, told journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, June 16, that there is no record of the development so far, The Nation reports.

Issa-Onilu said: “We cannot comment at this moment on media reports suggesting the Edo governor or anyone else has left our great party.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Obaseki had finally dumped the APC in a final effort towards cementing his interest in governing Edo state for another four-year term.

The governor tendered his resignation from the party after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, June 16, at the State House, Abuja.

This decision came amid a frosty relationship and unresolvable differences between him and the national chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole.

The political feud between the governor and Oshiomhole climaxed on Friday, June 12, as Obaseki was disqualified from the APC governorship ticket race.

Among top reasons, the governor was shown the exit door by Jonathan Ayuba-led screening committee over an alleged defective certificate in what looked like a final effort to shatter his re-election bid.

Oshiomhole later said the governor was disqualified because the APC is not a party of "big men" where rules can be remodelled to favour the interest of powerful individuals.

Governor Obaseki might soon announce his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) having been meeting with the top hierarchies of the party including Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state. Edo state guber election is scheduled for September 2020.
