- Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state may soon dump APC and join PDP
- Obaseki's hope of being re-elected on the platform of APC was dashed on Friday, June 12
- The Edo state chairman of the PDP, however, said there won't be automatic ticket for Obaseki if he joins the party
Tony Aziegbemi, the Edo state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has confirmed that Governor Godwin Obaseki and other top officials of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would soon join his party.
Aziegbemi on Monday, June 15, said the governor would not be given an automatic ticket to fly the party’s flag as other aspirants had shown interest in the same position.
Legit.ng gathered that the PDP has fixed its governorship primary for June 19 and 20.
The APC screening committee disqualified Obaseki and two others from contesting the party’s primary, scheduled for June 22.
In a telephone interview with NAN on Monday, June 15, in Benin, Aziegbemi said: “I can confirm to you that the governor, his deputy and the entire APC structure in the state will be joining PDP soon.
“However, I am not yet aware that the governor has obtained our party’s membership card. I can also say that there is no automatic ticket in the offing for him at all,” he told NAN.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that Timi Frank called on Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state to prevail on PDP leaders to accept Governor Obaseki of Edo state as their governorship candidate.
It was reported that Frank who is a former chieftain of the APC said Obaseki remains the best option for the PDP if it truly wants to take over Edo state.
Frank urged Wike to make those against Obaseki's defection to see reasons why the Edo governor should be given a chance.
He warned that the PDP may lose the forthcoming governorship election if it refuses to accept Obaseki as its candidate. Frank also advised Governor Obaseki to reach out to more PDP stakeholders to facilitate his acceptance by the opposition party.
In another report, there is a fresh confusion in the Nigerian presidency as two ministers gave conflicting instruction over the fate of the managing director of the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading (NBET), Marilyn Amobi.
The minister of power, Saleh Mamman, had earlier announced her removal “with immediate effect.”
