- It is now clear that APC will not reverse Obaseki's disqualification from the party's primary
- The party's NWC on Monday, June 15, foreclosed Obaseki's hope of being reconsidered
- Adams Oshiomhole, the party's national chairman, said the decision of the screening committee which disqualified Obaseki is final
The speculations that Governor Godwin Obaseki's disqualification may be reversed was finally put to rest on Monday, June 15.
Legit.ng reports that Obaseki was disqualified from participating in the primary by the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship screening committee on Friday, June 12.
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the party led by its chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, met with Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, the chief of staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, over Obaseki's disqualification.
Speaking with the State House correspondents after the meeting, Oshiomhole declared that Obaseki's disqualification from the race for the APC ticket is final.
Oshiomhole, however, allayed the fears that the party might lose Edo state to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if Obaseki defects to the opposition and gets its governorship ticket.
The Nation reports that the chairman of Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF) and Kebbi state governor, Atiku Bagudu, joined the NWC members at the meeting.
The NWC members in the team are: The national vice-chairman (northwest), Inuwa Abdulkadir; the national treasurer, Adamu Panda; the national welfare officer, Ibrahim Masari; and the national publicity secretary, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu.
Speaking on the screening of the governorship aspirants in Edo state, Oshiomhole said: “We have these three gentlemen on parade to contest the primaries, which has been slated for June 22. In line with the provisions of our constitution, we will do direct primaries. It’s more democratic, less susceptible to corrupt practices and it makes the party to be membership driven.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that a factional camp of APC recommended that Obaseki and two other party chieftains be expelled over alleged anti-party activities.
It was reported that the group which is loyal to the national chairman of the party, Oshiomhole, said the factional chairman of Edo APC Anselm Ojezua and organizing secretary, Aisosa Amadasun are guilty of anti-parties activities.
